Up for the challenge

The Baltimore Sun

Brigitte Strother is Broadneck's go-to player.

She compiled 16 goals and four assists last season to earn All-County and second-team All-Metro honors. She's a four-year player and unselfish senior leader who sets the tempo.

Last weekend, Strother led the fourth-ranked Bruins (4-0) to two wins in the St. Mary's tournament, scoring three goals in a 4-1 victory over Archbishop Spalding and one in a 2-0 win over the host Saints.

Strother also plays lacrosse and is a member of the Student Government Association the and Community Service Committee.

Your team played very well Saturday in the St. Mary's tournament, didn't they?

Yes, we won two games and played really strong. I think we are going to have a really great season, even though we have a tough schedule. I have a lot of faith in all of my teammates.

What's the team strength, offense or defense?

We are equally strong on offense and defense because our goals happen because of the team. A lot of plays start on the defensive end and they transition to offense. Our job is to finish the plays that the defense and midfield start. It's a whole team effort.

With No. 1 Severna Park moving up to the Class 4A East region, how tough is it going to be to get to states?

It's definitely going to be very tough with Severna Park and South River, the two hardest teams we play, but we couldn't be happier to play them. We love the challenge and look forward to it.

You travel to No. 3 South River today. Is there a home-field advantage in field hockey?

I don't think so. You get more fans when you are home, but as far as the mental game, as long as you prepare and practice the same way and play your game, it doesn't matter if you are home or away.

You also play lacrosse, so which sport will you play in college?

I would love to play either sport, but I think I have a better chance to play field hockey just because lacrosse is so competitive in this area. A lot of girls play [lacrosse] all year-round, and I focus more on field hockey in the offseason. I think I would be better prepared for field hockey. I really want to play field hockey.

What schools are you looking at?

Nothing is set in stone and no decisions made yet. I've heard from UVa. [University of Virginia], Wake Forest, Louisville, and I would love to play at Penn State or Maryland. I really want to go to a big school, but unfortunately all the big schools are D-1 and are really competitive to play for.

Where are your interests for the future?

I am really interested in the human body, like health. Right now I'm taking a sports medicine class with [football coach Jeff] Herrick. I love it so far, love human physiology, all that kind of thing. I'm definitely interested in that for the future. My mom is a physical therapist assistant and knows a lot about the human body.

What do you like to do when not in school or playing sports?

I'm a homebody and like to hang out at home with my family and friends. I also work at Cantler's restaurant as a food runner.

What's on your iPod?

Everything from Elvis to Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones - everything.

My brother is a hardcore Elvis fan and got me into that. We have all of his
