Games to Watch

The Baltimore Sun

No. 8 North Carroll @ No. 14 Century

WHEN -- Tuesday, 4 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- In a game that could be critical to the county title hopes of both teams, perennial power North Carroll meets defending county champion Century. After opening with a 2-0 loss to Westminster, Century regrouped in a 3-2 win over Linganore. The Panthers, meanwhile, won their first two games before suffering a 5-2 loss to Broadneck. Forward Alex Chilcoast scored three goals in her first three games to lead North Carroll.

North Carroll @ No. 10 Liberty

WHEN -- Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- After graduating 12 seniors from last year's Class 3A state finalist, North Carroll is still searching for its identity, and could get a huge boost by defeating rival Liberty. The Lions, regional finalists last season, got off to a 4-0 start through Thursday, outscoring opponents, 11-1. Conor Rigby and Nikolay Stoev lead Liberty in scoring, while defenders Cody Ditzel and Nate Walker pace the Panthers.

Middletown @ Century

WHEN -- Thursday, 6:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- Century is off to a 4-0 start and has looked dominant in wins over North Carroll, Mountain Ridge, Brunswick and Francis Scott Key, outscoring them by a combined 13-2. Now, the Knights will face their stiffest test so far against Middletown, a team that finished 10-2-1 last season and went unbeaten in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League Piedmont Conference. The Frederick County team has advanced to the state final two of the last three years.

Thomas Johnson @ Francis Scott Key

WHEN -- Thursday, 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- A pair of MVAL powers will meet in what should be one of the marquee matchups of the young season. Thomas Johnson (9-2 last season) dismantled Northeast, 38-0, in its opener, as running back Corey Hunt scored on an 80-yard kickoff return, 65-yard punt return and 38-yard reception. The Eagles (7-4), who defeated Westminster, 14-9, in their opener, are paced by running back Brad Martz, who last year led the county with 1,443 yards rushing.
