Iraq report draws attacks

A new White House report found satisfactory progress on nine of 18 benchmark measures in Iraq, an assessment that drew renewed attacks from Democratic critics of President Bush' s policy. Democrats have yet to agree on an alternative that would bring troops home faster than Bush has ordered. pg 9A

Embattled Gonzales leaves

Resigning Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales left the scandal-scarred Justice Department yesterday, declaring himself hopeful about its mission of defending the truth. Gonzales quit after 2 1/2 years at the department amid investigations into whether he broke the law and lied to Congress. He has denied any wrongdoing. pg 3A


Constellation to stop dumping

Under threat of a lawsuit from state regulators, Constellation Energy Corp. said that it will stop dumping coal fly ash at a site in Anne Arundel County while it negotiates and carries out a plan to clean up neighbors' contaminated drinking water. A Constellation spokesman declined to say where it would deposit the debris instead. pg 1B

Hopkins oncologist dead at 65

Dr. Martin D. Abeloff, an internationally recognized oncologist who led the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center for 15 years, died of leukemia yesterday at the hospital where he spent most of his professional career. pg 1B

Homeless numbers 'troubling'

Nearly one-quarter of homeless people in the city have not had housing for more than three years, according to a census report on Baltimore's homeless population. The number of homeless people, estimated at 3,000, has not changed much, but the percentage of chronically homeless people has increased substantially, the report says. pg 3B
