Sister Mary Camillus Smith, a Sister of Mercy and a retired nurse, died of heart disease Wednesday at her order's retirement home in the Pinehurst section of Baltimore County. She was 88.
Born Josephine Smith in Washington, she was raised in Columbia, Pa., and Emmitsburg, where she graduated from St. Joseph's College High School. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1940 and received the name Mary Camillus. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Mount St. Agnes College in Mount Washington.
She was a student nurse at Mercy Medical Center in downtown Baltimore, where she was later a hall supervisor. She also worked at her order's hospitals in Atlanta and Savannah, Ga., and was an infirmary nurse at Mount St. Agnes College in the 1960s.
Friends in her religious community said she was known for her kindness to other sisters who could not drive, shuttling them to appointments or shopping.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 11 a.m. today at the Villa, 6806 Bellona Ave.
Survivors include two nieces, Kathryn Rickell and Agnes Smith, both of Westminster; and two nephews, Donald Smith of Westminster and Richard Smith of Downingtown, Pa.
