Tanya Sharpe, Ph.D., has joined the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Social Work as an assistant professor. Sharpe has extensive research experience related to public health, violence prevention and diversity. She previously taught at Harvard School of Public Health and Boston College School of Social Work.
Dr. Shanthi Marur has joined the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center's Upper Aerodigestive Cancer Program. Marur completed her residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit. She recently was selected for a 2007 American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award for her participation in a variety of research projects.
Dr. Mohamad Allaf has been appointed director of minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery in the department of urology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Allaf graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2000. His areas of interest include kidney cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer and the minimally invasive management of these cancers.
Three researchers from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have been awarded funding from the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports research leading to targeted therapies for cancer. Dr. Stephen Baylin, professor of oncology and medicine, and Robert Casero, Ph.D., professor of oncology, were selected for research on colorectal cancer. Their work has led to an investigational drug study to treat the disease. Dr. Curt Civin, professor of oncology and pediatrics, was selected for his leukemia research.
