Broadneck volleyball beats No. 1 Centennial

Kourtney Salvarola had seven kills, six digs and two aces as sixth-ranked Broadneck upset top-ranked Centennial (0-1), three sets to none, yesterday in girls volleyball.

The host Bruins (1-0) won, 25-11, 25-20, 26-24.

Coach Romonzo Beans attributed the win to a strong defense.

"Our defense was the big key," he said. "I think we really picked up our defense this year. I could go down the line and say everyone averaged three digs."

Kerri Anderson had seven kills, three digs, an ace and three blocks, and Shelby Green added 14 assists and five digs for Broadneck.

Girls soccer

Centennial 2, IND 1 -- Alyssa Vorce scored the game-winner on a fast break four minutes into the second overtime to lift the visiting Eagles over the Indians (1-1).

Field hockey

No. 9 North Carroll 2, South Carroll 0 -- Ashlea Carl scored the game-winner at the 14:30 mark of the first half to lead the host Panthers (2-0) past the Cavaliers (0-1). Kristin Clift assisted on Carl's goal before sister Candy Clift added an insurance goal 2:25 later. Caitlin Bach had four saves for North Carroll, six fewer than South Carroll's Bridget McTavish.
