The Baltimore Sun

The summer of 1943 was a scorcher in Baltimore. There had been 49 days in the 90s by Sept. 7, when a warm afternoon gust blew through the open, eighth-floor windows of the Meadowridge cemetery company. It caught $22,000 in cash piled on a table for deposit and launched $10,600 in $100 and $50 bills out the window. A mad scramble ensued below at Guilford and Baltimore streets, joined too late by Meadowridge employees. Of the total, The Sun reported, three 50s were recovered.
