FOOTBALL
DeMatha @ No. 3 Gilman
WHEN -- Saturday, 1 p.m.
OUTLOOK -- In what has become a highly anticipated early-season showdown, the Greyhounds (1-0) are looking to avenge last fall's 24-6 loss to the Hyattsville powerhouse that ended a 17-game winning streak. DeMatha (0-1) leads the series 5-3, but The Washington Post's top-ranked team dropped its season opener to St. Xavier of Cincinnati, 28-7. Joey Ehrmann and Chris Burnett lead a tough Gilman defense, while running back Jordan Love ignites the offense.
No. 5 Edmondson vs. Friendly
WHEN -- Saturday, 7 p.m.
WHERE -- At Poly
OUTLOOK -- The Red Storm's opener is a clash of state champions. Edmondson took the Class 2A crown last December in a 39-7 romp over McDonough of Charles County, while the Patriots, ranked No. 2 by The Washington Post, beat River Hill, 37-18, in Class 3A. Look for All-City quarterback Carroll Washington to lead the Red Storm, which returns a solid nucleus from a 13-1 team.
FIELD HOCKEY
No. 8 Arch. Spalding @ No. 2 Bryn Mawr
WHEN -- Tuesday, 3:45 p.m.
OUTLOOK -- The defending Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champion Mawrtians face an early test against a reloaded Cavaliers team that finished 10-9-1 last season. Both teams have a lot of skill and balance. All-Metro second-team goalie Abigail Bisbee, midfielder Peyton Hawkins and forward Sarah Cole lead Bryn Mawr.
BOYS SOCCER
No. 15 Loch Raven @ No. 3 Calvert Hall
WHEN -- Tuesday, 3:45 p.m.
OUTLOOK -- The visiting Raiders, who reached last year's Class 2A state title game, rely on a stingy defense led by sweeper Steve Ehatt, while the Cardinals revolve around gifted striker Christian Barreiro. How well Ehatt and Co. can control Barreiro will go a long way in deciding this early-season neighborhood test.
GIRLS SOCCER
No. 2 McDonogh @ No. 3 John Carroll
WHEN -- Tuesday, 4 p.m.
OUTLOOK -- The perennial private school powers have staged a lot of one-goal games, and this early-season IAAM A Conference contest could be no different. The Eagles are banged up but still have firepower in Gigi Mangione and Megan Gibbons, as well as a defense led by County Player of the Year Ali Brennan. The Patriots are led by striker Allyson Carey and goalie Sarah Mosier.
