Games to watch

The Baltimore Sun

No. 4 Fallston at No. 6 Mount Hebron

WHEN -- Today, 5:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- One of the Vikings' toughest tests on their way to the Class 3A state championship last season came in the East regional title game, when they escaped with a 2-1 overtime win against the Cougars. The big question for the Vikings this season will be who takes over the scoring chores left behind by graduated standouts Mike Napolitano and Justin Martinelli.

Mount Hebron at No. 4 River Hill

WHEN -- Friday, 7 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- Falling one game short of a Class 3A state title last season, the Hawks start their quest for a state crown against the Vikings. The challenge for the visitors will be trying to contain the Hawks' running game led by Michael Campanaro and Zach Martin, who also spark River Hill's defense. FIELD HOCKEY

No. 11 Glenelg vs. No. 15 Severn

WHEN -- Saturday, 10 a.m.

WHERE -- At South River Invitational Tournament

OUTLOOK -- The Gladiators, Class 2A state finalists last season, face an early test against an Admirals team that has 13 seniors. Look for the front line duo of Amy Thompson and Kristy Black, who combined for 25 goals and 12 assists last season, to try to get the Gladiators off to a high-scoring start. A win over the Admirals would send Glenelg to the tournament title game against either No. 4 South River or defending Class 4A state champion Quince Orchard of Montgomery County.

No. 1 Arch. Spalding at Glenelg

WHEN -- Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- Glenelg veteran coach Dean Sheridan likes to challenge his team with a difficult out-of-league schedule early. It doesn't get any tougher than Spalding, which captured the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title last season and has loads of talent back. The Gladiators have to replace nine starters from last year's Class 2A state title team.

No. 11 Mount Hebron at No. 7 River Hill

WHEN -- Tuesday, 5:45 p.m.

OUTLOOK -- The visiting Vikings have eight starters back, led by hitter Meghan Campbell, while the Hawks counter with hitter Maddi Lee and the addition of freshman Sarah Okey. It is the first of many tests for both teams this season, as six county teams are ranked in The Sun's Top 15 preseason poll.
