Kit aims to help blacks quit smoking
The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has put out a new program aimed at helping African-Americans quit smoking.
The Power to Quit Smoking Kit program consists of six colorful information cards. Each covers a different topic, so people can follow the program from beginning to end or use just the parts that interest them. Topics include preparing to quit, quitting plans, how to stay smoke-free, reasons to quit and a list of local resources.
The kit was developed with help from community members.
To request a kit, call 410-222-7979 or go to www.aahealth.org. (Click on "Learn to Live" and then "Request Free Materials" at the bottom of the page.)
The department's Office of Minority Health also sponsors free smoking cessation classes with partners in the African-American community. County residents can sign up for classes that begin mid-October at Restoration Community Development Corp. in Annapolis. To register, call 410-267-6350.
