Family Movie Night planned at the Miller library branch

Friends of the Howard County Library will present Family Movie Night at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Miller library branch, 9421 Frederick Road.

The Iron Giant will be shown. Refreshments will be provided and registration is not necessary.

County offers classes in drawing, painting

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor drawing and painting classes for ages 55 and older from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 10 through Dec. 10, at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center in Ellicott City.

Participants will work in a variety of media and learn about the contributions of past and contemporary artists. A supply list will be discussed at the first class.

The cost is $60. Materials, which must be purchased separately, cost about $50.

Line dancing class at Ellicott City center

A Beginner Plus Country Line Dancing class for ages 55 and older will be offered at the Ellicott City Senior Center from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 19 through Nov. 21.

Teachers sought -- A group of former Centennial High School teachers is seeking other members of the faculty who taught at the school during its first two years, 1977-1979. An event is being planned in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Centennial's opening. Wanted -- Fire Department units, marching bands, color guards, antique cars, motorcycles and community organizations are needed to participate in the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's annual parade, to be held Oct. 6. Knitting for charity -- A community-service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. Feast -- The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department will hold a bull, oyster and shrimp feast from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 8 at the fire hall, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge. On the menu are roast beef, raw oysters, oyster fritters and stew, steamed shrimp, salads, chips, sodas and beer. Study courses -- Registration is open for fall Stressless Tests study-skills courses for middle-schoolers, to be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 10 through Oct. 1 at Burleigh Manor Middle School. Afternoon classes are to meet from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 11 through Oct. 2 at Burleigh Manor.

Classes for high school students will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 19 through Oct. 10, at Centennial High.
