Dr. P.K. Mathur of Baltimore wonders whether the Internet stories he's reading - about Mars appearing as big and bright as the full moon on Aug. 27 - are true. Alas, they are false. This is the latest mutation of an Internet rumor that appears every summer. It is rooted in a real event, which occurred Aug. 27, 2003, when Mars was closer to Earth (35 million miles) than it had been for all of human history. But to the unaided eye, it was still just a reddish dot in the sky.
