School board will meet Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold an administrative meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices at 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

Meetings will be broadcast on CETV, Channel 21 on Comcast cable TV and repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sunday and the following Thursday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Comcast donates supplies to school

Robert Moton Elementary School has been selected as the recipient of the Comcast CARES Back to School Drive.

The school supplies, donated by Comcast employees, will be delivered to the school at 10 a.m. Thursday. Superintendent Charles I. Ecker will attend the event.

Each year, Comcast employees in the greater Baltimore area are encouraged to participate in a back-to-school drive. Items donated include notebooks, backpacks, pencils, glue sticks and binders. School staff will distribute the supplies to students when they return to school.

Certification courses offered at CCC

Carroll Community College will offer reading courses for teachers seeking early childhood/elementary certification and renewal, and secondary certification and renewal, in fall 2007 and spring/summer 2008.

The courses are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education to meet the new reading coursework requirements for teachers.

Classes begin Aug. 27. The last day of registration is Saturday.

Faculty will offer classroom instruction, project-based assignments, individual conferencing and online instruction.

Courses may be eligible for reimbursement by Carroll County Public Schools if the classes are required for certification or renewal.

For early childhood/elementary certification and renewal, courses include Processes and Acquisition of Reading and Assessment for Reading Instruction.

For secondary certification and renewal, courses include Teaching Reading in the Content Area, Part 1 and Teaching Reading in the Content Area, Part II.

Carroll also offers courses for conditional teachers completing their MSDE certification. They include Educational Psychology, Special Education, Effective Teaching Methodology: Secondary Education, Human Development and Assessment in Education.

To register, teachers should take their school identification badge and visit Room A102 at the college, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster.

Montessori school opens Aug. 29

A new Montessori school for children ages 2 to 5 years old will hold a grand opening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at 7590 College Road in Sykesville.

The Ava Wanas Montessori School will be owned and operated by Marie Atalla.

The curriculum will include a French enrichment program. The school will have two classrooms, both with a diapering station.

The school will offer part- and full-time programs, as well as before and after care for working parents. Potty training is not a requirement for entry.

Events will celebrate start of school year

Carroll County public schools have scheduled back-to-school activities, such as orientations for new students, meet-the-teacher nights, socials, volunteer training and open houses.

Parents should call their child's school for activities or the CCPS public information office at 410-751-3020.

Volunteers needed for school system

The Carroll County public school system uses parents and other volunteers who give services, time and encouragement to students and teachers.

To ensure that participants are adequately trained, volunteers are required to attend an annual training session before beginning a task or acting as a chaperone.

Training is offered throughout the school year at each Carroll school as well as regionally throughout the county.

All chaperones involved in overnight trips or activities will also be required to submit a background check at least 30 days before the scheduled activity.
