Aging office needs fair, lunch help
Howard County Office on Aging is recruiting volunteers for its signature event - the 50+ EXPO - to be held Oct. 19 at Wilde Lake High School in Columbia.
More than 100 volunteers are needed to help at the health fair, with flu shots and balloons, at Caf? 50+, with the speaker series, exhibitor check-in, transportation, elevators, clean up and many other tasks. A free lunch is included.
Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. A variety of shifts is available.
The Office on Aging is also recruiting volunteers to assist with a new lunch program, in which a Korean meal will be offered two Mondays a month, beginning in October, at the Bain Center in Columbia.
Volunteers must speak Korean and be ready to help with set-up, greeting guests and serving meals, and act as liaison between participants and the lunch manager.

Naturalists wanted for school programs
The Howard County Conservancy is seeking volunteer naturalists to teach in the conservancy's school programs at Mount Pleasant, the organization's nature reserve and headquarters at 10520 Old Frederick Road, Woodstock. The naturalists will help conservancy staff to lead hikes on the 232-acre property.
Training will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting next month. Participants will learn ecological concepts and become familiar with history, wildlife and plants at Mount Pleasant. The cost for materials, which include a manual, is $10.
The conservancy provides educational programs for children and adults at its Gudelsky Environmental Education Center, including hands-on activities for pre-school and elementary-school-age children, service learning for seventh-graders, and eight weeks of summer camps for children ages 5 to 11.

Lend your energy to NFL competition
Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is seeking energetic, outgoing volunteers to assist with the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick program 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Lane Park.
Assistance is needed with registration and measuring distances at skill stations.

ESL tutors are needed for fall
FIRN, a nonprofit organization serving foreign-born Howard County residents, is seeking volunteer tutors for English as a Second Language programs beginning in the fall.
Club Leap volunteers plan and conduct English enrichment activities for elementary and middle school students. The programs are held twice a week at Howard County schools.
In the Adult English Tutoring Program, volunteers tutor adults one-on-one on Tuesday evenings or Saturday afternoons.
Experience is not required. Training is provided for both programs.

Patapsco park needs helpers
Patapsco Valley State Park is seeking volunteers to staff visitor centers, lead interpretive programs, guide nature walks and hikes, host camps, care for animals, maintain trails, work on publicity and publications, garden, take photographs and help with general maintenance.
Volunteers are needed to help the park trail crew maintain trails 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, and Sept. 29 (National Public Lands Day).
Volunteers, ages 12 and older, should bring gloves, sturdy footwear, a hat, water, safety glasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, snacks and any emergency medications. Registration is requested. Trail work will not be done if it rains.

AmeriCorps needs dedicated people
Volunteer Maryland! is seeking coordinators to organize volunteers for youth mentoring programs, services for people with disabilities or environmental restoration projects.
Volunteers commit to serve as members of AmeriCorps (a domestic Peace Corps) for one year, beginning Sept. 19. The position includes extensive training, a $13,000 living allowance, health care and a post-service education award of $4,725.
Full- and part-time opportunities are available.
Candidates must have verbal and written communication and computer skills; exhibit excellence in problem-solving and conflict-resolution, leadership and public speaking; and be committed to national and community service.
Applicants must also have access to reliable transportation. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Applications must be received by Aug. 31.

Adoptive homes for greyhounds
Greyhound Welfare is seeking adoptive homes and volunteers for its retired racing greyhounds.
The dogs, former racers from East Coast tracks, are elegant and gentle. They are kept in foster homes until adopted.

Volunteers sought to care for felines
The Howard County Cat Club, a nonprofit, no-kill cat rescue service, is seeking volunteers to care for cats in its "group home" on alternate Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Volunteers are needed to feed the cats, perform housekeeping chores and care for 14 to 18 cats that are to be adopted. Volunteers must have transportation, commit to spend two to three hours per visit and should also have access to e-mail.

Better BedRest Inc., a nonprofit support, resource and referral service for women placed on bed rest during pregnancy, is seeking telephone volunteers who have had a bed-rest experience or have been close to someone with such an experience.
