Upper Chesapeake Health will offer a free information session on Laparoscopic Gastric Banding, a new procedure recently added to the Bariatric Surgery Program.

The session will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Harford Memorial Hospital in the Havre de Grace Room.

Free seminar to give tips on joint pain

Upper Chesapeake Health will hold a free seminar on joint pain with William Cook, a board certified orthopedic surgeon, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at Harford Memorial Hospital in the side section of the cafeteria.

Participants can learn how to have a better quality of life and hear discussions on different options for those with joint pain.

Cholesterol, blood pressure screenings

Upper Chesapeake HealthLink's Community Wellness Center at 626A Revolution St. in Havre de Grace offers free blood pressure, sleep disorder and body composition screenings.

Also available are cholesterol screenings for $10, osteoporosis screenings for $15, and full cardiac risk assessments for $20 (cash or check only).

No appointments are necessary. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Please note that osteoporosis screenings require a scan of the bare foot; dress so that socks or stockings may be easily removed.

Various support groups offered

Upper Chesapeake Health offers support groups and classes that are free to the public.

Many support groups for specific diseases and medical problems meet at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, while others meet at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace.

Support groups include bariatric surgery, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia, food addicts, lupus and stroke.

The Upper Chesapeake Family Birthplace also offers classes and support groups for expectant parents, new parents and pregnant teens, as well as babysitting safety and sibling classes at the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.

Bereavement support groups for parents who have lost a child, and adults who have been widowed are also available.

Upper Chesapeake HealthLink also provides free blood pressure screenings throughout Harford County.

Program focuses on diabetes control

Upper Chesapeake Health will offer a Diabetes Self-Management Outpatient Education program.

Patients can learn to control their diabetes with education. This program includes meetings with a diabetes educator to help you understand diabetes, and a registered dietitian to develop your individualized healthy meal plan.

Clients will need a written prescription or referral from their physician to participate in the diabetes program.

Registration accepted for tobacco classes

Harford County Health Department is accepting registration from county residents for the following Stop Tobacco classes:

6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 21, Aug. 28, Sept. 4, Sept. 11, Sept. 18 and Sept. 25 at the Harford County Health Department in Bel Air, 119 Hays St.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 22, Aug. 29, Sept. 5, Sept. 12, Sept. 19 and Sept. 26 at the Harford County Health Department in Aberdeen, 34 N. Philadelphia Blvd., Room 209.

The classes include developing a plan to quit using tobacco, learning stress management techniques, receiving information on controlling weight while quitting and discussing relapse prevention.

Classes are free. Pre-registration is required.
