Ice cream social slated Aug. 25 in Glenwood

The Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville, will hold a Back-to-School Ice Cream Social from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 25.

Children can chose from a variety of crafts activities and have a bowl of ice cream.

The cost is $3 for those ages 13 and older; $5 for those ages 4 to 12 (to cover the cost of craft projects, which the children can take home).

The center will sponsor a Children's Flea Market from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 8 on the building's side parking lot.

Children, parents and grandparents are invited to clean out toy boxes, closets and garages and sell or swap the contents. Outgrown clothing, toys, bikes, books, music, games and handmade crafts are welcome.

Space will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required a week before the event. The cost is $20, plus $5 for the use of a 6-foot-long table.

Soccer team to hold yard sale Aug. 25

The Marriotts Ridge High School Girls Soccer Team will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 25 on the school parking lot, 12100 Woodford Drive, Marriottsville, at Route 99 and Woodford Drive.

The rain date is Aug. 26.

Proceeds will benefit the girls soccer program.

Banjo player set to perform Thursday

Banjo player Tony Trischka is to perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at Baldwin's Station restaurant, 7618 Main St., Sykesville.

The concert room opens for seating and dining at 6:30 p.m.

Deployed -- Air Force Tech. Sgt. Dana L. Bankenship, whose wife, Holly, is the daughter of James E. Fourcade of Mount Airy, and Brenda A. Fourcade of Waynesboro, Pa., has deployed to southwest Asia to support Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and the Combined Task Force -- Horn of Africa. He will be a part of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing. Operation Enduring Freedom is the name given to anti-terrorism military operations by active duty and reserve troops; Operation Iraqi Freedom indicates military efforts to secure Iraq.

Self-defense class -- The River Hill Community Association is offering Tae Kwon Do for All Ages, an opportunity for parents, and children, couples and friends to learn self-defense and fitness together. For kids -- Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville, will offer its second Kidz Night Out, with crafts, music, dancing, movies and games, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Horse-care tips -- Days End Farm Horse Rescue, 15856 Frederick Road, Lisbon, will offer a horse care clinic for horse owners and anyone wanting to purchase a horse. The "If Only Love Was Enough" seminar, a two-day clinic, will be held Saturday and Aug. 19. Discussion will cover horse handling and psychology, safety, hoof and dental care, health problems, care of older horses, emergency care, nutrition and parasites. The clinics, which include advice on trailering and boarding, will be taught by horse industry professionals.
