Red Sox update

Boston is busy trying to fend off the New York Yankees in the American League East. The Red Sox have split their past 10 games. David Ortiz sat out Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels with a sore left shoulder, an injury he sustained July 20 during a head-first slide into second base. A magnetic resonance imaging showed no damage. Infielder Eric Hinske is on the bereavement list, and his replacement, Brandon Moss, is expected to accompany the team to Baltimore. Rookie Dustin Pedroia is 14-for-30 this month. Beckett is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in three starts against the Orioles this season. The Orioles haven't faced Matsuzaka since spring training.
