Baltimore police have charged a 17-year-old boy in the killing of a man in East Baltimore, and detectives are investigating possible connections to another killing that occurred in the same neighborhood less than an hour before, authorities said yesterday
Police on Wednesday charged Dwayne D. Erving of the 1500 block of Lakewood Ave. with first-degree murder, assault and handgun charges, court records show. He is accused of fatally shooting a man early Wednesday in the 2300 block of E. Oliver St.
Police officers were in the area investigating a fatal shooting that occurred 45 minutes earlier and were two blocks away when they heard the gunshots. They rushed to the scene and arrested a suspect.
Erving is charged with killing Joseph Antoine Bryant, 27, of the 4300 block of Stanwood Ave. in Northeast Baltimore. The motive in the killing was not disclosed.
Erving had been charged with attempted murder in September, in connection with a shooting last July, court records show. He was accused of shooting a man in a dispute over a pit bull.
Prosecutors put the July case on the inactive docket because the victim and witnesses -- including the boy's mother -- were uncooperative with police and prosecutors, a city state's attorney's office spokeswoman said yesterday.
Police said they are investigating whether the shooting in which Erving is charged is linked to the shooting Tuesday night in the 1400 block of N. Milton Ave.
Police said one man was found about 11:15 p.m. with gunshot wounds to his chest and head. He was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. at Johns Hopkins Hospital. A second man was found with gunshot wounds a block away, but he survived after being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
