Barbara R. Boswell, a retired registered nurse and a longtime Severna Park resident, died Aug. 3 of cancer at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was 59.

Barbara Roth was born and raised in Cincinnati. She earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1970 from what is now Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo.

In 1972, she earned a master's degree in personnel administration from Indiana University and worked in residence hall management at Bowling Green State University.

After her 1973 marriage to H. Wayne Boswell, she moved to Webster, Texas, where she did volunteer work.

In the early 1980s, the couple moved to Severna Park, and Mrs. Boswell earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1985.

She was a nurse for 13 years at Anne Arundel Medical Center until her cancer was diagnosed in 1998.

"She did not just live with cancer and monthly chemotherapy treatments for nine years, she thrived," her husband said.

Mrs. Boswell did extensive volunteer work at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she was an active member. She also worked with the homeless.

She went on camping trips with her family and traveled in Europe. She also was an avid reader and liked to sew.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at her church, 611 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park.

Also surviving are a daughter, Kathryn V. Boswell of Bloomington, Ind.; and two sisters, Nancy R. Cooper and Diana Roth, both of Cincinnati.
