A Howard County corrections officer has been charged in the theft of a license plate that was on his car in the detention center parking lot, according to court records.

Sgt. Wayne Anthony Tyler, 32, of 1500 block of Matthews Town Road in Hanover, was charged July 31 after a police officer was called to the lot for "recovered property," said Sherry Llewellyn, a spokeswoman for Howard County police.

The officer ran the Pennsylvania license plate through a state database and found that the tag was reported stolen.

"Tyler said that he did not know the tags were on the vehicle when he drove it," according to charging documents.

Tyler is on paid administrative leave, according to Kevin Enright, a spokesman for County Executive Ken Ulman.

Tyler did not return a phone message left with another person at his residence. Tyler was vice president of the correctional officer's union as recently as early July, according to the union contract, which was attached to a recent County Council agenda.
