Mariners update

Seattle was 3 1/2 games back of the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West entering yesterday. The Mariners lost seven straight games in late July but rebounded to win six of their next seven before dropping the final two games of their weekend series with the Boston Red Sox. Manager John McLaren is 15-16 since taking over from former Orioles manager Mike Hargrove, who resigned July 1 for personal reasons. First baseman Richie Sexson was 2-for-25 with nine strikeouts on Seattle's recent 10-game homestand. Left fielder Raul Ibanez is also having a down year, one of the reasons the club last week called up top outfield prospect Adam Jones, 22, who was hitting .314 with 25 home runs and 84 RBIs at Triple-A Tacoma. Star center fielder Ichiro Suzuki is a .376 career hitter against the Orioles. The Mariners are 4-2 against the Orioles this year.
