Ravens fans gasped during yesterday's morning practice when defensive tackle Haloti Ngata accidentally rolled into quarterback Steve McNair during an 11-on-11 drill. McNair was slow to get up, but he stayed in and threw a pass on the next play.
A RUMBLING HEAP
The offense unveiled a new wrinkle when McNair threw a screen pass to tight end Todd Heap. Don't know too many defenders who would be pleased to see a 6-foot-5, 252-pound player running in the open field behind a group of linemen.
WILLIAMS UP, DOWN
Wide receiver Demetrius Williams executed an up-and-out pattern to perfection, leaving cornerback Derrick Martin behind at the 20-yard line and hauling in a 40-yard touchdown pass from McNair during one-on-one drills. But Williams also dropped a pass that hit him in the stomach.
"Hey, 84 and 85, you haven't done anything today!" free safety Ed Reed said to wide receivers Clarence Moore (No. 84) and Derrick Mason (No. 85). Moore and Mason missed the first 35 minutes of practice for undisclosed reasons.
Offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden (turf toe), and linebackers Mike Smith (shoulder surgery) and Dan Cody (knee surgery) are on the physically-unable-to-perform list and did not practice. Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg (right thigh bruise) ran along the sidelines, but did not participate in team drills.
Today's practices are 8:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m (for special teams).
