Esther S. Hopper, a retired special-education technician, died of congestive heart failure Thursday at Severna Park Center Genesis HealthCare. The Severna Park resident was 86.

Born Esther Lucille Simpson in Denison, Ohio, she was raised in nearby Uhrichsville. She moved to Anne Arundel County in 1963.

Mrs. Hopper was an Anne Arundel County Board of Education special-education office worker from 1963 to 1987, when she retired. She spent her entire career at the board's central office in Annapolis.

She had been a deacon at the Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, where she was also a member of the Esther Circle, a group called the Presbyterian Women and the adult and handbell choirs. She also was a member of the lay ministry to the congregation.

Mrs. Hopper knitted and held weekly Sunday family dinners.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at Woods Memorial.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Theodore R. Hopper, a retired chemist; two daughters, Lee Hopper Lace of Severna Park and Martha Hopper Clayton of Stevensville; and eight grandchildren. A son, J. Bradford Hopper, died in 2001.
