Multiservice Center expands its services

The North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center, a cooperative center created by local nonprofit organizations to reach residents in the southeast area of the county, has expanded to include counseling, legal assistance, information and referral, immigrant services and assistance with food, energy and housing for those in need.

The center has expanded its hours of operation and is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Seven organizations offer services at the center, including the Community Action Council, Family and Children's Services, FIRN, the Howard County Department of Social Services, Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, the Domestic Violence Center and the Legal Aid Bureau.

Funding is being provided by the Howard County Department of Citizen Services, Horizon Foundation and Columbia Foundation.

The facility is in the Whiskey Bottom Shopping Center, 9105 All Saints Road, North Laurel.

Blood drive set today in Laurel

A blood drive is to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Best Buy, 14160 Baltimore Ave. in Laurel. Those who participate will receive a gift.

'Latin Soul' concert to be held Friday

In celebration of the 29th anniversary of the Montpelier Summer Concert Series, the South Laurel Recreation Council Inc. will sponsor a concert of "Latin Soul" -- salsa, cha-cha, rumba and merengue -- at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the grounds of Montpelier Mansion, 9652 Muirkirk Road at Route 197.

Take a picnic and a blanket or a chair. Free public and handicapped parking is available via the Montpelier drive and Muirkirk Road entrances off Route 197.

Open arms -- The Open Arms Christian Child Development Center, 13611 Laurel-Bowie Road, Laurel, will hold an open house from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today. Visitors can meet the staff and tour the facility. Care is available for infants and toddlers. Before- and after-school care is available for grade-school children, and half-day programs are offered for 3- and 4-year-olds. Art workshops -- Camellia A. Blackwell, executive director of the International Center for Artistic Development at Historic Savage Mill, is offering art workshops for children ages 5 to 15 from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday and Aug. 18 and Aug. 25 in the mill's New Weave Building, 8600 Foundry St., Savage. Classes will focus on watercolor and acrylic painting. The cost is $20 a class, including materials. Registration is requested. 301-604-4484.
