DONALD RICHARD JOHNSON, SR., age 83, of Southern Pines died on Saturday, July 28, 2007 at the Penick Village in Southern Pines. Born on March 20, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Emil Leonard Johnson and Lillian Reynolds Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a veteran and served his country during WWII with the United States Marine Corps. He retired from CSX Railroad after 47 years of service as an engineering officer. He was a member of the Oasis Shrine of Charlotte, NC, a member of the Evansville Consistery in Evansville, Indiana, a member of the Southern Pines Masonic Lodge # 484, Moore County Shrine Club, and was formerly a member of the Kiwanis of the Pines. He loved golf and gardening. He is survived by his wife Gloria Duer Johnson of Southern Pines, NC. One son, Dr. Donald R. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Brookie of Pinehurst, NC. One grandson, Matthew T. Johnson. One great-grandson, Brenden T. Johnson. Two step-grandchildren: Andrew B. Stirling and Mary Mac Hess. Four step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers: Gary Johnson, Robert Johnson, and John Johnson all of Baltimore, Maryland. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Southern Pines with Rev. Dr. David C. Bowling officiating. Inurnment will take place at Moreland Memorial Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oasis Shriners Hospital, PO Box 56066, Charlotte, NC 28256-066 or to the Sandhills Community College Horticulture Gardens, 3395 Airport Rd., Pinehurst. NC 28374. Boles Funeral Home and Crematory of Southern Pines is serving the family.
