Cecil teen drowns in river

The Baltimore Sun

A Cecil County teen drowned yesterday evening in the Susquehanna River after he and his parents fell from a boat into the river under the U.S. 40 bridge in Havre de Grace.

About 7:15 p.m., the 19-year-old and his parents were in a 14-foot boat powered by an outboard motor near Garrett Island when, for an unknown reason, all three were tossed into the water, said Scott Hurst, chief of the Susquehanna Hose Company in Havre de Grace.

Hurst said two people on personal watercraft witnessed the incident and rescued the parents. He said more than an hour later, divers recovered the victim about 20 feet from were the family fell into the slow-moving river.

Hurst said the teen, who was not wearing a life vest, was taken by ambulance to Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace and was pronounced dead. His name was not released.

The accident is being investigated by the state's Natural Resources Police.
