Tejada's back
Miguel Tejada went 0-for-5 in his first night after coming off the disabled list, including a strikeout against New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in the suspended game. But a new night brought better results. Tejada lined a two-run double down the left-field line against Roger Clemens in the first inning, and looped a two-run single to right in the seventh against reliever Luis Vizcaino. He also hit the ball hard in the fifth inning, lining out to center.
Starting up
As a reliever, Brian Burres finished with a 5.40 ERA and one nosebleed against the Yankees last season. He found much better results as a starter last night, allowing one run and four hits over six innings. Burres carried a shutout bid into the seventh before Hideki Matsui led off with a home run. Jorge Posada singled, and Burres left the game to a standing ovation with his pitch count at 98.
Still on hold
Alex Rodriguez will have to wait at least one more day for his 500th career home run. With cameras flashing on every pitch to him, Rodriguez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts to remain stuck on 499. He struck out to end the first inning, popped up in the fourth, struck out in the sixth and again in the eighth. His strikeout in the sixth was part of a double play, with Derek Jeter getting thrown out at second base on an attempted steal.
On deck
The Orioles will attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the Yankees today and run their home winning streak to nine games. Daniel Cabrera will oppose Chien-Ming Wang. Wang has faced the Orioles once this season, allowing six runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. He's 2-4 in day games, 9-1 at night. Afterward, Cal Ripken's induction speech will be telecast on a delayed basis on the video scoreboard.
