Culinary, hospitality open house at HCC
Howard Community College will hold a Hospitality and Culinary Management open house for students interested in careers in these fields at 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.
The free event includes a hands-on culinary demonstration, a light lunch and a gift for those who attend. The open house will be in Room 400 of the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall.

Glenelg High offices to close for upgrades
Renovations at Glenelg High School will require closing the school's offices from Tuesday through Friday to upgrade electrical units.

Online registration open for fall at HCC
Online registration is open for fall continuing education, noncredit courses at Howard Community College. Mailed brochures will reach county residents early next month.
New courses are being offered in business; lifestyle and leisure; information technology; health care; for seniors ("I'm Retired: Now What?" and others); and in the college's Kids on Campus program.
New courses range from the practical ("5 Internet Tools to Market Your Business," "Staging Your Home for Sale" or "Journeyman Electrician Exam Preparation") to "Beer Appreciation," "Elementary Conversational Arabic," or "Photoshop Phun" for children. More than 60 new courses are being offered.

Teacher workshop at Patuxent refuge
The environmental education office of the Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a workshop series for teachers at the National Wildlife Visitor Center in Laurel.
An orientation to the visitor center is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29. Wetlands will be discussed Oct. 6.

Registration begins for PSAT, SAT classes
Registration is open for a PSAT and SAT preparatory course, to be held from noon to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and 18 at Chapelgate Christian Academy, 2600 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville.
Classes are open to all high school students. The $185 cost includes tuition and materials.

Help is available finding child care
Parents in Howard County can receive free assistance finding state-licensed child care centers, family child care providers and programs for school-age children and preschools.
The service, called LOCATE: Child Care, can be reached at 410-313-1930 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. Trained child care counselors will be available to help parents find the care best suited to their needs, preferences and ability to pay.
LOCATE: Child Care, a service of the Howard County Child Care Resource Center, also advises parents on programs for which they may qualify, such as subsidized health care, subsidized child care and tax credits.

Official has academy nomination forms
Rep. John Sarbanes has announced that applications to be considered for a nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are available from his office.
Sarbanes said students who live in the 3rd Congressional District are eligible to be considered by him for a nomination, a prerequisite for applying to one of the academies.
The application packet is posted at www.sarbanes. house.gov. Students also can request an application form by writing to Sarbanes at 600 Baltimore Ave., Suite 303, Towson 21204, or by sending an e-mail to academies@mail.house.gov.
The deadline for receipt of completed application packets is 5 p.m. Nov. 1.

Study skills classes scheduled
Registration is open for Stressless Tests summer study skills classes, to be held at Centennial High School in Ellicott City.
Classes for high school students will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 7 though 10 and repeated Aug. 14 through 17.
Middle school classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 7 through 10 and Aug. 14 through 17.
The cost is $165 and includes a copy of the Study for Success digital video disc by Betty Caldwell.
