Youth dance set Saturday at the Elkridge firehouse

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a "Summer Bash" youth dance for ages 9 to 15 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge.

Tickets, available only at the door, are $8.

Tap dance class to begin Sept. 11

The Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, will offer a tap dancing class, with Jackie Dunphy, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, starting Sept. 11.

The cost is $30 for 10 hours.

Baseball school -- The Centennial High School Boosters will hold the second session of Eagle Baseball School, a summer camp for boys ages 7 to 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow through Friday. The camp, to be directed by Centennial's boys varsity baseball coach Denis Ahearn, will offer instruction and drills in throwing, hitting, fielding, base-running, catching and strategy. Area players and coaches will give lectures and demonstrations. The emphasis will be on fundamentals, sportsmanship and fun. The program includes contests, treats, a report card and certificates. Teen crafts -- Summer craft programs for teens are being offered at libraries. "Pins and Needles," at the Miller branch, offers youngsters ages 11 to 17 a chance to work on projects or take a skein of yarn and learn to knit and crochet. The group will meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow. Registration is required. 410-313-1950.

At the library -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will sponsor "Teen 'Zine!" -- a meeting for youths ages 13 to 17 interested in working on the new online newsletter written by teens for teens -- from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the third Monday of each month.

Howard County Master Gardeners will be at the Miller branch library to answer gardening questions and examine problem plants from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Residents are invited to bring questions and plants.

"Movin' Up to Middle School," a program offering survival skills, study secrets and strategies for making new friends to those entering sixth grade, will be offered from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Miller branch. 410-313- 1950. Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English conversation club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

Chess club -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., will hold a chess club for ages 13 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play chess. Snacks will be provided. Registration is not needed. 410-313-5077.

Knitting for charity -- A community-service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. 410- 313-7279.

Bertucci volleyball camps -- Bob Bertucci Volleyball will return to Volleyball House in Elkridge with two camps: an individual-skills camp Aug. 6 to Aug. 8 and a team camp Aug. 9 to Aug. 11. Meadowbrook walks -- Nurse practitioners in Howard County invite the community to walk with them in Meadowbrook Park, behind Target in Ellicott City, on the third Saturday of each month. The next walk will be held Aug. 18. The park has half-mile, one-mile and two-mile trails.
