The Virginia Highlands Festival, held in the 20-square-block historical district of Abingdon, Va., is an entertaining and educational way to experience the history of Colonial Virginia. The two-week event has a variety of family-oriented activities, such as historical re-enactments, walking tours, magic and juggling shows, literary workshops and an arts and crafts show. The festival also has a diverse musical slate with bluegrass, Celtic and gospel performances.

The festival runs through Aug. 12 in downtown Abingdon. Festival hours vary daily. Admission is free, but some performances may have ticket fees. Information: 276-623-5266 or vahighlandsfestival.org.
