Ready's Image, a Maryland-bred colt sired by More than Ready, took the Grade II Sanford Stakes at Saratoga yesterday to become the leading 2-year-old in the country. The victory was his third in four races.
Bred by David and JoAnn Hayden in Upperco, Ready's Image was purchased for $410,000 in September for owner James Scatuorchio.
"This colt is still learning," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "He has a ton of ability and the fact he is still improving is encouraging." Pletcher said the colt will next enter Saratoga's Grade I Hopeful Stakes on Sept. 3.
Sweetnorthernsaint and Ah Day -- Trainer Mike Trombetta said Sweetnorthernsaint, the second-place finisher in the Preakness, "doesn't like running in the heat" and will return to racing in the fall. Meanwhile, Ah Day, voted Maryland's 2006 Horse of the Year, is on a three-month refesher program after a problem was found in the top area of his rump during training about a month ago.
Mario Pino -- Ellicott City's Mario Pino will ride Diabolical tomorrow at Saratoga in the A.G. Vanderbilt, a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up that is part of the new Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series. The winner earns a spot in the Breeders' Cup Championships. Diabolical, a 4-year-old son of Artax, has two wins and three seconds in his five starts at six furlongs.
Preakness tickets -- Tickets for next year's Preakness will be available Aug. 4 and 5 in a booth at the Virgin Festival at Pimlico.
