David Gerstman says crape myrtles in his Baltimore neighborhood usually blossom together. This year, "some ... seem to be in full bloom. Others have only had sporadic blooms. What could account for this strange behavior?" Vanishing bees? Drought? Alan Thomson, nursery manager at Valley View Farms in Cockeysville, blames winter damage. Crape myrtles are vulnerable this far north. After a mild start to our winter, overnight lows in late January and early February sank to the teens, even single digits, turning myrtle buds to duds.
