3 charged in robbery, shooting

Baltimore police released the names yesterday of the three men they have charged in an armed robbery and shooting that occurred early Wednesday and was recorded by a police surveillance camera on a street corner west of downtown.

The suspects were identified as Jarrett Johnson, 22, Jerard Kane, 20, and Jonathan Kane, 21. Police said Johnson was charged with robbery and handgun violations, Jerard Kane was charged with attempted first-degree murder, and Jonathan Kane was charged with possession of a handgun.

Police arrested the men shortly after the 3 a.m. shooting at Park Avenue and Mulberry Street. The robbery victim, Aaron Maxwell, 27, was shot in the left hip and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. Police said that a civilian observer was monitoring a camera when the incident unfolded and watched what officers said was an apparent drug deal, a possible robbery and the shooting.

Ice cream shop vandalized

Three glass windows were smashed at a Ben & Jerry's ice cream store in the Inner Harbor, causing about $900 worth of damage, early yesterday morning, said Richard Snow, the franchise manager.

Officer Troy Harris, a city police spokesman, confirmed yesterday that police were notified of a break-in at 600 Light St., where the ice cream store is located.

Snow said it appeared that the vandals attempted to break down a door, then smashed the windows and entered the establishment when they bent a window frame. There was no cash at the store overnight. "There is nothing to take," Snow said, "unless they want some ice cream."

He said that he does not have a security camera. "We didn't think we needed them," he said. "Why can that happen right in the middle of the Inner Harbor?"

Snow said that the store was closed yesterday for repairs, but is expected to be open today.
