Hard to hit

The last time Daniel Cabrera won a game, he held Arizona to one run over six innings June 22. He would have been bidding for a no-hitter last night against Tampa Bay if B.J. Upton hadn't singled in the fourth inning through a spot vacated by Brian Roberts, who was covering second base. Cabrera left after seven scoreless innings, with Upton's single the only hit allowed. He walked five but kept escaping trouble.

Toughing it out

Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir didn't have time for the pain. A hard smash from Chris Gomez nailed Kazmir on his right lower leg in the fifth inning, and the Orioles eventually loaded the bases with one out and the game scoreless. Kazmir was in obvious pain, but he retired Roberts on a shallow fly ball and struck out Corey Patterson to escape his first serious jam.

Delivering when needed

It has been a down year offensively for Aubrey Huff, who entered last night's game batting .254 with six homers and 42 RBIs. But he was hitting .296 with runners in scoring position and two outs, and he came through again in the clutch. Huff singled to left field with two outs in the sixth inning to score Nick Markakis and give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Huff was 2-for-18 on the road trip and entered last night 11-for-64 in 17 games since hitting for the cycle June 29.

On deck

The Orioles continue their series against the Devil Rays with left-hander Erik Bedard looking for his 10th victory. He'll be opposed by Andy Sonnanstine. Bedard has won his past three starts and five decisions. For his career, Bedard is 8-3 with a 2.96 ERA against the Devil Rays. Sonnanstine has lost his past five decisions, but he has given up three earned runs or fewer in four of his past five starts.
