Lancaster Foods purchases former Giant Food warehouse

Lancaster Foods LLC has purchased the former Giant Food warehouse in the Jessup wholesale food center. The 215,000-square-foot facility on Conowingo Avenue is to be renovated to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards, the national standard for "green" buildings.

The building, which will double Lancaster's capacity for produce distribution, must meet standards for water savings, energy efficiency, sustainable construction materials and indoor air quality. The company has specialized for 20 years in produce procurement and distribution for high-volume-sales retail chains and wholesale distributors.

After renovations, Lancaster expects to begin operations in the facility during the first quarter of next year. CB Richard Ellis, a commercial real estate firm, assisted with the acquisition.

Lancaster Foods LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Guest Services Inc. of Fairfax, Va.
