The state fire marshal's office is investigating two explosive devices that went off at a KFC restaurant in Eldersburg, authorities said yesterday.

The restaurant on Route 32 was preparing to close shortly after 10 p.m. Friday when two chemical devices commonly known as "soda bottle bombs" went off, one outside the building and one inside a kitchen trash can, said Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray.

"It's a container that carries various chemicals that cause a reaction," Mowbray said.

An employee called 911, and firefighters and the Carroll County hazardous materials team responded. About $2,000 in damage was done to food products that were sprayed by the chemical in the device and had to be thrown out, Mowbray said.

No one was injured in the incident, Mowbray said.
