Tracking the Terps

The Baltimore Sun

Here are some odds 'n' ends from the posh Pinehurst Resort, where the media spent three hours interviewing Atlantic Coast Conference football players yesterday.

We'll get to that eventually, but here's what the Maryland contingent is up to: Andrew Crummey acknowledges that he can't golf well but won't turn down a chance to play at Pinehurst. Christian Varner said he sneaked out to the driving range - twice - to work on his game before the players, coaches and some media tee off this morning on Pinehurst No. 8. Varner said his game is limited to the miniature version.

Ralph Friedgen hit the greens early, as the coaches were paired up with the bowl representatives yesterday. I haven't seen him yet, and neither has Debbie Yow, who breezed in for an ACC dinner here Saturday night. I caught up with her for a few minutes yesterday morning before she zipped off again, this time to speak to a group of athletic director-wannabes in Texas. ...

I've come to realize this event - the ACC football kickoff - is about golf, not football. Last year, we were near the PGA Tour headquarters.

During basketball season, this same event takes place in one day. I head to Greensboro, N.C., and back. Today we interview the coaches, but not until they've played a round. ...

The media were given preseason ballots to fill out (and you remember how good we are at that, picking Wake Forest to finish last last year). I don't vote because it's against company policy. We find out the results today so we can ask the coaches what they think about us picking them to finish, say, fourth.
