Light lunch, gifts at HCC open house
Howard Community College will hold a Hospitality and Culinary Management Open House for students interested in careers in these fields at 11 a.m. Aug. 11, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.
The free event includes a hands-on culinary demonstration, a light lunch and a gift for those who attend.
The open house will be in The Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall, Room 400.

Teachers workshop at Patuxent refuge
The environmental education office of the Patuxent Research Refuge will offer a workshop series for teachers at the National Wildlife Visitor Center in Laurel.
An orientation to the visit center is planned 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29. Wetlands will be discussed on Oct. 6.

$160,000 for math, science programs
The Howard County public school system will receive $160,000 ($10,000 for planning and $150,000 for implementation) to support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics programs. The Maryland State Department of Education has awarded nearly $2 million to local school systems for STEM initiatives.
"We are very pleased to receive funding to support initiatives in this critical area," said Superintendent Sydney L. Cousin in a statement. "This will assist us in our efforts to ensure that our graduates are truly prepared for the world -- today and in the future."
"STEM programs have never been more important to our students and our state as a whole, with Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) initiatives placing a new focus on industries of the 21st century," said State Superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick in a news release. "Our efforts in science and math education will pay off for years to come."
College board trustee reappointed
Gov. Martin O'Malley has reappointed Katherine Rensin as a member of the Howard Community College Board of Trustees, starting this month, for a term of six years.
A member of the board since 2003, Rensin has served on the board's legislative committee. She has been a member of the HCC Educational Foundation Board since 2001.
Rensin has mentored and coached students through the college's StepUp and Silas Craft Collegians programs.
Registration opens for PSAT, SAT classes
Registration is open for a PSAT and SAT preparatory course, to be held noon to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and 18 at Chapelgate Christian Academy, 2600 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville.
The classes are open to all high school students. The cost is $185, and includes tuition and materials.

Help is available finding child care
Parents in Howard County can receive free assistance finding state-licensed child care centers, family child care providers and programs for school-age children and preschools.
The service, called LOCATE: Child Care, can be reached at 410-313-1930 between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays. Trained child care counselors will be available to help parents find the care best suited to their needs and ability to pay.
LOCATE: Child Care, a service of the Howard County Child Care Resource Center, also advises parents on programs for which they may qualify, such as subsidized health care, subsidized child care and tax credits.

Service academy nomination forms
Rep. John Sarbanes has announced that applications to be considered for a nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are available from his office.
Students who live in Maryland's 3rd District are eligible.

Stressless Tests classes scheduled
Registration is open for Stressless Tests Summer Study Skills classes, to be held at Centennial High School in Ellicott City.
Classes for high school students will be held noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 7 though Aug. 10 and repeated Aug. 14 through Aug. 17.
Middle school classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. July 31 through Aug. 3, Aug. 7 through Aug. 10 and Aug. 14 through Aug. 17.
The cost is $165 and includes a copy of the Study for Success DVD by Betty Caldwell.
