REALITY CHECK

The Baltimore Sun

Every year on So You Think You Can Dance, a similar thing happens: At least one contestant whose specialty is partner dancing is undone during the "dance for your life" solo if he or she ends up in the bottom three couples.

This week, ballroom/Latin dancer Anya Garnis was the casualty. Though she was practically flawless in her foxtrot, she and her partner were in the bottom three, and the judges didn't find her solo exciting enough to keep her around. The same fate befell Faina Savich in the early rounds.

On the flip side, though, the specialty of last year's winner, Benji Schwimmer -- West Coast swing -- is certainly a partner dance. But Schwimmer came up with such lively solos that he always survived.
