Transit use urged for Artscape

About 500,000 people are expected to visit Artscape, Baltimore's annual celebration of the cultural arts, this weekend. If all of them come to the city by car, it is going to be a mess.

The Maryland Transit Administration is urging Artscape-goers to use public transit to reach the festival site, centered on the 1200 block of Mount Royal Ave.

The MTA noted that the Metro subway, running from Owings Mills to Johns Hopkins Hospital has a station at State Center two blocks from the festival site. Free parking is available at stations from Owings Mills to Mondawmin.

The light rail system, which runs from Hunt Valley to either BWI Marshall Airport or Glen Burnie, has stops convenient to the festival at University of Balti- more/Mount Royal and Cultural Center. Free parking is available at some Light Rail stations.

Light rail operating hours will be extended to 9 p.m. Sunday for Artscape.

The MTA said its buses will operate on regular schedules, but with supplemental buses added to accommodate more riders. Bus lines connecting to the Artscape site include Nos. 3, 11, 19, 21, 27 and 91.

On Sunday only, the No. 14 will connect with the Metro State Center station.

Transit fares are $3.20 for a round-trip ticket or $3.50 for an MTA day pass, which can be used on the rail systems and buses.
