Labyrinth walk scheduled Aug. 19

Journeys Community, a nontraditional spiritual-seekers group, will meet at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, 1525 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville to walk the labyrinth on the center's grounds.

The labyrinth, an archetypal image in many cultures, is a symbol of journeying toward the divine.

The group will meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 19. Light refreshments will be available after the walk.

Journey Community meets during the fall, winter and spring at 10 a.m. Sundays in the second-floor auditorium of Vantage House retirement community, 5400 Vantage Point Road in Town Center, Columbia.

Summer activities, many of them outdoors, are to be held through Labor Day; regular services will resume Sept. 9.

Bag sale held in Ellicott City

The Trinity Gift & Thrift Shoppe at Pfeiffer's Corner, 6010 Waterloo Road, Ellicott City, is holding a bag sale this month and next.

Customers can fill a shopping bag with clothing or other items for $3.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Harvester Bible school this month

Harvester Baptist Church, 9605 Old Annapolis Road, Ellicott City, will present the RBP (Regular Baptist Press) "Rescue Zone" vacation Bible school from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 30 through Aug. 3.

The curriculum is based on the theme "Saved by God's Power." The program also honors policemen, firemen and other rescuers. Bible stories, games, crafts and snacks are planned.

The weeklong program for 2-year-olds through elementary-school age children ends with a family cookout and a visit from members of the fire department.

Registration is requested, walk-ins are welcome. Admission is free.

While the children are occupied with camp, the Rev. Edward Simpson will conduct a seminar for parents, "Effective Parenting in a Defective World." Admission is free.

Drums, worship at Owen Brown center

Christ United Methodist Church and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia will co-sponsor a worship service featuring TAGE, a steel-drum band, and sacred drummers from several traditions, at 10 a.m. Aug. 5 at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center.

Everyone is welcome.

Summer camp set at Bet Yeladim

Bet Yeladim Preschool and Kindergarten is offering a summer camp program for children ages 3 to 5. Art, acting, soccer, basketball and T-ball are planned.

Applications are available at Beth Shalom Congregation, 8070 Harriet Tubman Drive and at the Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Drive, both in Columbia.

The weeklong camps extend through Aug. 17.

Registration is also being accepted for the 2007-2008 preschool, full-day kindergarten and parent/child programs.

School offers football camp

Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, 17301 Old Vic Boulevard, off Route 108 in Olney, will offer the second session of its 2007 Falcon Football Camp for boys ages 8 to 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The camp, which includes guest appearances by area college coaches, encourages teamwork, effort, sportsmanship and confidence.

The cost is $160.

Christian aerobics classes planned

Body & Soul Christian Aerobics is offering eight-week sessions of cardio and strength training set to contemporary Christian music.

A class is offered at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at South Columbia Baptist Church.

There is a fee; a discount is available for new students.

Church seeks DVDs, CDs, book donations

Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church, 14551 Burntwoods Road, Glenwood, is collecting books, videos, compact discs, digital video discs and records for its 11th Media Sale.

Donated items can be left in or around the blue box at the side entrance to the church, if rain is not expected.

Tax statement forms are inside the lid of the box.

If a car is parked near the door (and the door is unlocked), donations can be placed on any table inside the church.

Encyclopedias and copies of Reader's Digest or National Geographic are not accepted.
