Cherry Hill killing brings year's total in city to 177
A West Baltimore man was shot in the head about 5 p.m. yesterday in the 2800 block of Round Road in Cherry Hill and died a short time later at Harbor Hospital.
Police said Steven Brandon Sr., 41, of the 1000 block of Mount Holly St., was shot several times in the head and died less than an hour later at the hospital.
Police said that shortly before Brandon was shot he was seen riding a motorized scooter, which had not been recovered.
Brandon's death brought to 177 the number of killings in the city so far this year, compared with 149 the same time last year, police said.
In Southeast Baltimore on Tuesday night, a man was fatally shot in an apartment in O'Donnell Heights, police said.
About 11 p.m., Southeastern District police responded to a shooting in an apartment in the 6100 block of Fortview Way and found a man, 29, bleeding from a wound to the neck.
The man was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he died less than an hour later.
His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
The pair of homicides followed a weekend in which five people were killed in different parts of the city. Since May, the city has averaged more than a killing a day, police crime statistics show. So far this month, 21 deaths have been classified as homicides by police, the figures show.
Late Monday, police officers found Perry Costley, 18, of the first block of Walden Laurel Court in the Gwynn Oak section of Baltimore County, shot at least once in the chest in the 3400 block of St. Ambrose Ave. in the city's Park Heights neighborhood.
Police said Costley was walking with friends about midnight Monday when a gunman shot him in the chest. Police said Costley died at Sinai Hospital at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Costley was the second homicide victim in a month on the same block, police figures show. On June 18, David Antonio Carter, 26, was shot in the head about 9:30 p.m., near his home. He died a half-hour later at Sinai Hospital, according to police.
Also yesterday, police released the names of two men killed in separate and unrelated incidents in recent days.
Police said that about 1:30 a.m. July 12, Timothy Johnson, 37, of the 400 block of S. Bond St., was found lying in an alley in the 200 block of S. Herring Court bleeding from multiple stab wounds.
Johnson died about three hours later at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Police said Johnson was stabbed during a fight.
Also identified was Conrad Strange, 25, of the 1100 block of Montpelier St., who was shot about 3:45 a.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of N. Gay St. Strange died later at Hopkins.

Man gets 20 years for killing girlfriend
A few weeks before James Summerville fatally stabbed his girlfriend, police obtained a warrant to arrest him on charges of assaulting her, according to Baltimore prosecutors. Yesterday, Summerville, 18, of the 800 block of N. Arlington Ave. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon. Circuit Judge Lynn K. Stewart sentenced him to 20 years in prison to be followed by four years of probation. Artesha Moses, 19, Summerville's girlfriend and the mother of his 2-year-old son, was killed March 27 in a house in the 700 block of N. Carey St. On March 3, Summerville had assaulted Moses at the same address, prosecutors said. Police obtained a warrant for him, but it was not served, prosecutors said.
