j-ref announces changes to board

Michael A. Mobley, executive director of j-ref, has announced changes to the Howard County financier's board of directors for the 2008 fiscal year, beginning this month.

Christopher Young of the Business & Technology Law Group in Columbia, is the board's new chairman. New at-large board members include Michael Mercurio, Deborah Stroman and Tina M. Corner.

Mercurio is an associate at Offit Kurman P.A. in Maple Lawn.

Stroman, a former borrower of j-ref and a sports marketing consultant, is the co-founder of Soulful Golf Inc. in Ellicott City, and owner of Stroman Athletic and Asset Management in Columbia.

Corner is president and owner of the Alternative board franchise in the Baltimore-Washington corridor.

Their terms will run for three years.

With headquarters in the Center for Business and Technology Development in Columbia, j-ref is a private, not-for-profit funding source for Howard County startup and emerging companies, offering business loans up to $250,000 and support services.

Meg Moon to chair Columbia Foundation

Meg Moon, a private attorney, has been elected chairwoman of the Columbia Foundation. Mary Ann Scully of Howard Bank is vice chairwoman; Dorothy Harris of Pal-Tech is secretary; and Brian Walter of M&T; Bank is treasurer.

New board members include former WMAR-TV broadcaster Andy Barth; Bernie Bradley, president of InSight Performance Group; Annie Geierman of Citizens National Bank; and Barb Van Winkle, president of Nancy Adams Personnel.

Founded in 1969, the community foundation has awarded more than $9 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations for human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs.

Money for the grants comes primarily from income generated by the foundation's endowment, which is supported by more than 200 funds established by local businesses, families and individuals.
