Mariners update

Mike Hargrove's shocking resignation as manager hasn't slowed the Mariners, who trail the first-place Los Angeles Angels by three games in the American League West. Seattle is 15-7 vs. the East. Two of those wins came against the Orioles in a June series at Safeco Field, where the Orioles are 12-27 since the ballpark opened. Before Saturday, Jose Guillen (.474) and Adrian Beltre (.472) were the leading hitters in the majors this month. All-Star closer J.J. Putz set a club record with his 28th consecutive save Saturday. Right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, the All-Star Game's Most Valuable Player, signed a five-year contract extension worth $90 million. Ramirez is being activated from the disabled list to make tonight's start. First baseman Richie Sexson injured his thumb shortly before the break and narrowly avoided a trip to the disabled list.
