Ex-teacher's motions hearing set in sex case

A motions hearing for a former Howard County teacher charged with having inappropriate sexual contact with students is scheduled for Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a trial scheduled to begin Tuesday for a former guidance counselor who was accused of having crack cocaine in his vehicle at school has been postponed.

No new date has been set. Joseph Samuel Ellis, 25, who taught history at Glenelg High School, was arrested Jan. 8 after police said he had inappropriate sexual contact with several students. His trial is scheduled for Aug. 20.

Alan Silberman, 62, who worked as a guidance counselor at Howard High School, was charged with possession of crack cocaine May 16. He was a 35-year veteran of the school system.

Silberman and Ellis are among four former Howard County public school system employees facing trials after being arrested during the 2006-2007 school year. All four have been terminated from their positions with the school system, Mark Blom, the school board's attorney confirmed last week.

The two others, Alan Meade Beier, 52, and Kirsten Ann Kinley, 27, were charged in separate incidents with having inappropriate contact with teenagers. Beier's trial, which had been scheduled for July 23, has been postponed. Kinley's trial is scheduled for July 26.
