Workshop focus is conserving water

The Town of Mount Airy will sponsor a water conservation workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Town Hall, 110 S. Main St.

Organized by the Citizens for a Green Mount Airy, the workshop is designed to educate citizens on water conservation. Tips on saving water, basic water conservation practices, water saving devices and re-using water will be given.

Also, a limited number of water saving devices will be given to town residents who attend the workshop.

Dan Andrews from the Carroll County Environmental Advocacy Committee will share cost-effective tips on saving water.

The workshop will be broadcast on Carroll County Cable Channel 23 and shown throughout the summer.

A second workshop on "Grow Your Own Food" will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Natural Zing Farm, 1851 Florence Road. Farm owner Jeff Rose will give a tour and educational session on growing organic food, including container, garden and greenhouse farming.

Democratic Club picnic is July 22

The Carroll County Democratic Club will hold its summer picnic from 2 p.m. to sundown July 22 at the Union Mills Lions Club Park, Littlestown Pike and Old Hanover Road.

The guest speaker will be Andrew Duck, Iraq War veteran, who is campaigning for Maryland's 6th Congressional seat in 2008.

A Democratic trivia game will also be held. Food and beverages will be provided. Members are asked to provide a dish to share: last names beginning with A-L, a salad dish, and M-Z, a dessert.

All are welcome. Paying members are free, others are $10.

Reservations are requested for planning purposes.

Beautiful People seeks nominees

The Maryland's Most Beautiful People Volunteer Awards is seeking nominees for the 21st annual awards.

Coordinated by the Maryland You Are Beautiful Program with the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, the awards recognize individuals who give of themselves to better life for everyone in Maryland.

This year's theme is "Carroll County -- Volunteers Plant the Seeds of Kindness," celebrating the impact that volunteers have on their community.

Carroll County is soliciting nominations to recognize and select a representative to attend the state ceremony in Annapolis in November.

Nomination forms are available at all Carroll County Public Library branches, the County Office Building, Carroll County Department of Citizen Services (10 Distillery Drive, Westminster), and the county Web site, http/ccgov.carr.org/mmbp.

The deadline for nominations is Aug. 1.
