3 Vermont residents charged after drugs are found in I-70 stop

Maryland State Police arrested three Vermont residents after drugs and cash were discovered during a search of their vehicle on Interstate 70 outside Mount Airy on Thursday, authorities said yesterday.

Police said that a search of the vehicle, stopped for a moving traffic violation, turned up 86 Ecstasy tablets, four LSD tablets, 19 grams of marijuana, cocaine, drug paraphernalia and $3,376 in cash.

Arrested were Ariel Moore and Cosbie Marable of Burlington, Vt., and Jon Christiano of Ripton, Vt.

At a bail review hearing yesterday, all three were detained on $10,000 bail each -- all on charges of possession of controlled dangerous substances with intent to distribute, authorities said.

An additional $4,050 was seized from a second car whose occupants came to the Westminster barracks to check on the three, with whom they were traveling, police said.

Sewage flows into Piney Run feeder

An undetermined amount of sewage flowed Thursday afternoon into an unnamed tributary that feeds into Piney Run, according to the Carroll County Bureau of Utilities.

The spill flowed from a blocked manhole in a wooded area about 100 feet off the end of Sugar Maple Avenue in Hampstead, authorities said.

A temporary bypass line and pump are being installed to direct wastewater into the next open manhole until permanent repairs are made. The affected area was cleaned and lime was applied, officials said.

Notices advising residents to refrain from any contact with the water, such as fishing and swimming, have been posted along the creek.

Signs will remain until bacteria test results are clear.
