Mignon Lieberman, 93

The Baltimore Sun

Mignon N. Lieberman, who donated works of art to Towson University as a memorial to her two sons, died in her sleep July 1 at her Phoenix, Ariz., home. The former Mount Washington resident was 93.

Mignon Newman was born in Baltimore and was a 1931 Western High School graduate. She received a degree at what is now Towson University, where she met her future husband, Sidney Lieberman, a dentist.

After their 1938 marriage, they worked together at his Eutaw Place dental practice, which moved to Park Heights Avenue in 1955.

In 1983, the couple began donating art from their collection to Towson University, from which they both had graduated in 1932. The donations were made in memory of their sons: Richard, who died in a 1968 scuba diving accident; and Ronald, who died of a heart defect three years later.

Mrs. Lieberman was an instructor for more than 20 years in Towson University's sociology department. The Liebermans also endowed the Mignon Lieberman Sociology Award and the Sidney Lieberman Music Competition at the college.

Her husband died in 1996.

Plans for a memorial service are incomplete.

Survivors include a nephew, Edward P. Newman of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a niece, Carol Newman Gluck of New York City.
