James G. Linz, a financial planner who had administered a medical practice, died of cancer Friday at his Timonium home. He was 54.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Parkville, he was a 1971 graduate of Calvert Hall College High School. He earned an accounting degree at Loyola College, where he also received a master's degree.
While an undergraduate, he played soccer and as a freshman was a member of the school's 1971 championship team.
He worked in grants and contracts at the University of Maryland in downtown Baltimore and later went on to be chief executive officer at a physicians practice based at its Shock Trauma Center. In 1992 he became chief executive officer at Towson Orthopaedic, a medical practice.
In 2001 he joined Medallion Investment Services Inc., a financial planning practice.
Mr. Linz was the 2005-2007 president of the Loyola College Alumni Association and was also a past board president at Maryvale Preparatory School.
At his death, he was a member of the Homewood Federal Savings Bank board of directors. He was also a past president of the Maryland Medical Group Management Association and the Orthopaedic Practice Assembly.
In his free time, Mr. Linz enjoyed handyman projects, as well as sailing and biking.and spending time with his family.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Loyola College Alumni Memorial Chapel, 4501 N. Charles St.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, the former Ann Weitzmann; three daughters, Megan Linz Dickinson and Annie Linz Deremeik, both of Towson, and Maria K. Linz of Lutherville; his parents, Dorothy Bindel Linz and William A. Linz of Towson; three brothers, William J. Linz of Riverside, N.J., Timothy F.X. Linz of Lutherville and Gregory J. Linz of Carney; a sister, Mary Susan Awalt of Timonium; and nieces and nephews.
