Charles Wayne Kempske, a career public servant who recently retired as deputy director of the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration, died of complications from pancreatic cancer Saturday at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Timonium resident was 63.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Parkville, he was a 1961 graduate of Parkville High School, where he played baseball. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree from the University of Baltimore.
He worked as a probation officer for the Maryland Juvenile Services Administration and later went into alcohol and drug counseling. He retired June 30 with 42 years of service as the deputy director of the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration, a part of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
"He loved his job, and anyone in need knew they could go to him for guidance and counseling," said his son, Kevin Kempske of Towson.
A Mason, he belonged to the Mount Moriah Lodge and the Boumi Temple.
Mr. Kempske enjoyed spending time with his nine grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Grace English Lutheran Church, 8601 Valleyfield Road.
Survivors also include his wife of 43 years, the former Jule Ann "Judy" Herb; and two daughters, Valerie Certeza and Kimberly Sharpe, both of Timonium.
